Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install central heating boilers or heat pumps?

We are specialised in the design and installation of floor heat only and do not install central heating or heat pumps. When we arrive to install floor heating we expect to find either a newly certified heating system or a pre-existing heating system in working order.

Do you mill in floor tile?

Yes we can mill in certain floor tiles. It it more costly to mill in tile due to the hardness of the tile and in some cases the tile can be so hard that it must be wet milled. It is always advisable to remove the tile before milling. It is very important that ALL the tiles are firmly bonded to the underfloor. If the tiles are not securely bonded they can come loose during milling. Should the tile detach during milling, the milling must stop and all the tile must be removed. If a few tiles are loose it is most likely that many tiles are loose. Floor heating milled into a tile floor that is not securely bonded could create problems with the finished floor later on.

Do I need a thermostat for floor heating?

Yes you do. Existing homes where floor heating is being installed usually have a thermostat connected to the central heating system. The existing thermostat can be used with the floor heating and can remain in the room to control the temperature. Some houses that are connected to city heat might not have a thermostat. In this case, the existing radiator temperature is controlled by thermostatic knobs. A room thermostat connected to a Zone Valve will need to be installed to control the heat in the room. We assume that you have a thermostat installed. If you don’t have one please notify before the floor heating is installed.

I want a Smart thermostat for use with my floor heating. Can I just exchange my regular thermostat for a Smart thermostat?

Smart thermostats are a hot trend at the moment. Replacing a regular thermostat with a Smart Thermostat will depend on the type of central boiler you have and the type of Smart Thermostat you want to use. Unfortunately, when it comes to thermostats it isn’t a “one size fits all” situation. Different types of boilers used different communication protocols. Since the Smart thermostat must communicate with the boiler it is important to determine if they can communicate effectively together. Newer boilers use a modulating system for heating the water. Smart Thermostats use this feature to create energy savings. Older boilers use an on/off system which may not be able to take advantage of the Smart thermostat features. Consult the requirements for your boiler before you buy a Smart thermostat.

For more information on Smart Thermostats please see our blog

Will you install and set-up my new Smart thermostat?

No, we do not install Smart thermostats for several reasons. Each proprietary smart thermostat has different installation requirements. The owner may need to sign up for an account with the manufacturer prior to installation. This account could require passwords or sensitive information. In addition, a phone app may also be required. The owner is responsible for understanding and executing the requirements to install their particular thermostat. Please find more information on Smart Thermostats in the Blog section.

If the water temperature in the central heating system is set to 80 C, will the floor heating also heat to 80 C?

No. The floor heating manifold has a thermostatic control knob. You can set the thermostatic control knob from 10 -60C. The floor will only get as warm as the set temperature. When the floor starts to cool off, the thermostatic knob will allow hot water to mixed with the colder water in the floor to maintain the set temperature. The system has a built in safety mechanism in case the thermostatic knob is ever accidentally turned to 60 C. In this case, the pump will automatically shut down when the temperature of the floor reaches 50 C. The system can be reset by returning the temperature setting on the thermostatic knob on the manifold back to 20-40 C, disconnecting the manifold from the power and then reconnecting it.

My floor heating tube was damaged before the flooring was installed. Can you fix it?

It is possible that a floor heating tube is ruptured or punctured before the final flooring is installed. The area of the damage can be repaired. However, the tubing requires the use of a specialised press to secure the couplings used in the repair. If a repair is made without the proper coupling installation the manufacturers warranty on the tubing is null and void. Repairs are costly and every effort should be made to make sure the floor is protected from damage.

Does milling create a lot of dust?

The material milled out of the channels for the floor heating is ground very fine. The milling machine is attached to a specialised vacuum system that captures 99% of this material. In relation to how much dust material is created during milling, very little escapes the vacuum. However, all electronic equipment and dust sensitive furniture must be removed prior to installation. Milling a floor is NOT dust free!

If want floor heating in the entire house, can the temperatures in different rooms be set to different temperatures?

Yes thats possible. This will require the installation of a Zone Control regulator to the floor heating manifold. Separate room thermostats can then be placed in each of the rooms that require different temperatures. In existing homes a wireless system allows the thermostats to be placed in the rooms where desired. Zone Control can be added at a later date if required.

Is Zone Control expensive?

Yes it is expensive. To install a wireless Zone Control you need a base station, thermostatic motors for each heating group, as well as a thermostats for each room that requires separate control. All these devices need to be installed and calibrated. A Zone Control add-on ranges from 800 - 1500 euros depending on your system.
